You Deserve Rest

Good morning ,

Across different countries this weekend carries different meanings.

In Jamaica, it is Labour Day — a recognition of work, contribution, and the hands that build communities and nations.

In the United States, it is Memorial Day — a time of remembrance, sacrifice, and reflection.

In Canada, many observe Victoria Day.

In the UK, the Spring Bank Holiday brings its own pause in the rhythm of work and routine.

Different histories.

Different traditions.

And yet, beneath all of them, I find myself thinking about something deeply human:

Our relationship to labor, effort, responsibility… and rest.

Because for many people, rest does not come easily.

The body may pause, but the mind keeps working.

There are emails waiting.

Responsibilities unfinished.

People depending on us.

Dreams we are trying to build.

Emotional weight we are still carrying quietly.

Some of us have become so practiced at surviving, producing, caregiving, and holding everything together that slowing down can almost feel uncomfortable.

As though rest must first be earned.

But this morning, I want to gently offer another perspective:

Rest is not a reward for exhaustion.

It is restoration.

It is how the nervous system softens.

How the mind clears.

How the body repairs.

How the soul remembers itself again.

And perhaps real discipline is not only learning how to work hard.

Perhaps it is also learning how to rest without guilt.

How to stop rehearsing tomorrow long enough to fully arrive in today.

This weekend, I’m reminding myself of that too.

I’m taking my tent and heading into the hills for a while — not to run away from life, but to step more fully into it.

To slow my thoughts down.

To breathe differently.

To listen again.

To remember what it feels like to be present without constantly anticipating the next thing.

There is something healing about stepping away from noise long enough to hear yourself clearly again.

So wherever you are reading this from this morning, I hope you allow yourself a softer beginning.

A slower breath.

A quieter pace.

A little more grace with yourself.

You do not have to carry the entire week before it begins.

You are allowed to pause.

Allowed to breathe.

Allowed to enjoy the simple gift of this moment.

The morning light.

The stillness.

The comfort of being present in your own life.

You do not need to earn that.

It already belongs to you.

With care,

Dr. Sandra Hamilton
