The Hand Returns

Dear friends,
In The Hand Returns: Apple, Craft and the Future of Design Education, I look at Apple’s MacBook Neo campaign and the deeper message behind its handmade production process. At a time when AI can generate polished images in seconds, Apple’s confidence in craft feels significant. It reminds us that the future of creativity will not belong only to those who can prompt quickly, but to those who can still see, make, judge and refine.
For design education, this matters enormously. Drawing, printmaking, model making, photography, typography, material experiments and critique are not nostalgic leftovers from another age. They are how students acquire judgement. They train attention. They teach consequence. They form the designer.
The article argues that AI can belong in the studio, but it must never replace formation. Students still need the resistance of materials, the discipline of the hand, the slowness of observation and the courage of critique.
