The rewrite that got him 3 director calls

Apr 20, 2026 2:01 pm

A designer I coached late last year messaged me one morning.

10+ years of experience. Shipped products at good companies. Strong foundation. Before we worked together he was doing what most experienced designers do. Applying online. Going through recruiters. Getting interviews but not offers.

One coaching session. We walked through where he was actually spending his time and what his materials were signalling. 90% of his time was front door applications. His portfolio described his work in activity language. "Led the design." "Conducted research." "Improved the experience."

We shifted the time split. We rewrote the impact statements on his strongest case studies using the same Creative Math methodology I am teaching on Thursday.

The next morning, the message came in.

Three to four calls booked with director and manager-level designers. A VP of Design at a major DevOps company agreed to chat. A Head of Design at a data cloud company replied to his outreach, told him they were hiring a senior IC soon, and asked for his portfolio. A Director of Product Design at a third company scheduled a call for the following week.

None of that came from an application.

Here is the part I want to name clearly. The math did not book those calls. The outreach did. But the math made the calls land. Because when a director-level contact looked at his portfolio before the conversation, they saw someone who thought in business terms. They got on a different kind of call.

That is the point of quantifying impact. Not to win the application game. To change the conversation once you are in the room.

Two things:

One. The workshop is Thursday 23 April and Friday 24 April.

Register here:

Thu Apr 23, 7pm PDT / 10pm EDT (Fri Apr 24 10am SGT)

Two.

If you want to volunteer to have your case study rewritten live during the session, I am taking submissions until Tuesday 21 April 9pm SGT. That is 24 hours from now.

I will pick 1-2 volunteers and we will run their case study through the Premium Portfolio Coach GPT on screen in real time. Full rewrite. You get a free coaching moment in front of the group. The math gets applied to your actual project.

Fair warning: you will be on camera. Your case study will be visible. If that is a hard no, still come; you will learn from the other volunteers.

Joseph

P.S. Three things to have ready if you volunteer: the case study URL, a rough estimate of how many users the product had, and the role/industry your users were in. That is enough to run the math.
