Summer Math Reset #2: The easiest way to reduce 'I'm done. Now what?'
Jun 09, 2026 12:01 pm
Hi teacher,
A few years ago, I noticed a pattern.
I'd spend time planning a lesson, preparing materials, and making sure everything was ready.
Then a student would finish in half the expected time, raise their hand, and ask:
"I'm done. Now what?"
Five minutes later, three more students were asking the same thing.
The problem wasn't that they were working too quickly.
The problem was that I hadn't planned what happened after they finished.
Now, whenever I plan an activity, I try to answer one extra question:
What will early finishers do next?
It doesn't have to be complicated.
Sometimes it's:
✔ A challenge problem
✔ A math puzzle
✔ A review activity
✔ A choice board option
✔ A self-checking task students can complete independently
The goal isn't to give students more work.
The goal is to give them meaningful work that doesn't require me to stop helping everyone else.
One of the biggest stress reducers in my classroom has been creating a small collection of activities that students can automatically move to when they finish early.
No decisions.
No scrambling.
No "What should I do now?"
Just a simple routine everyone understands.
Try this before summer ends:
Create a list of 3-5 activities students can always work on when they finish early.
Keep the list posted somewhere visible.
Your future self will thank you during the first week of school.
See you next Tuesday for Summer Math Reset #3!
