Here you are: your program for your Malta life - and more. 8 to 14 June 2026
Jun 08, 2026 6:01 am
Hi,
Two things stand out for me this week. On Saturday, Sahhar - one of Malta's heaviest and most committed metal acts - marks 20 years since their debut, and Swedish artist Linnea Hjerten is flying in as support (wohoo!). That's a real occasion. And if you want something completely different on Friday, head to the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta for Grains of... Sound - Ravel and Mussorgsky played live while a sand artist creates and destroys images in real time on a projected screen. One hour, 10 euros, genuinely unlike most things you'll sit through this year.
THIS WEEK IN MALTA
- The Malta International Arts Festival kicks off its outdoor sand sculpture trail this Friday, with large-scale works installed at three locations - Valletta, Birżebbuga's Pretty Bay, and Dock No. 1 in Cospicua - all free to visit from 9am to 11pm daily through to 21 June.
- Beach club season is properly underway now: MedAsia Playa opens its Monday afternoon session today and Cafe del Mar's weekly Thursday pool parties are back in full swing.
- June light stays long enough this week that an early evening walk along any harbourfront - Valletta, Birgu, even Marsaxlokk - is genuinely worth building into your week before the real summer crush arrives.
SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK: GRAINS OF... SOUND, PIANO AND SAND ART
One hour of Ravel and Mussorgsky piano music paired with live sand animation projected above the performer in Valletta - it's the kind of programme that sounds simple on paper and lands much harder in the room.
The Malta Society of Arts concert hall inside Palazzo de La Salle is a beautiful setting for this: intimate, historic, not too big. The sand artist works in real time, so what you're watching shifts and disappears in sync with the music - pictures built and erased in front of you. At 10 euros a ticket and only an hour long, it's easy to fit around dinner, and it's exactly the kind of thing you'll kick yourself for missing once it's sold out. Go Friday.
Details: Friday 12 June, 20:00-21:00 - Concert Hall, Malta Society of Arts, Palazzo de La Salle, Valletta - info here.

GET INVOLVED: BIRDLIFE MALTA IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
BirdLife Malta is the island's oldest environmental NGO - been at it since 1962,
running the conservation efforts that keep Malta's bird populations and nature reserves alive. They work across breeding bird surveys, nature reserve maintenance in northern Malta, raptor migration monitoring, and public education.
They're looking for volunteers across a few different roles: bird rehabilitation
(helping injured birds recover before release), reserve maintenance days, and
public engagement work. No specific experience needed - just an interest in the
outdoors and some regular availability.
How to join: here.
QUICK HITS
- The Malta International Arts Festival runs through late June and beyond - the full programme is at festivals.mt and it's worth scanning now so you don't end up missing something that only runs one night.
- Save the date: Carl Cox at UNO Malta on 12 August - pricing isn't confirmed yet but if his previous Malta shows are anything to go by, tickets move the moment they go on sale, so keep an eye on unomalta.com this week.
- Local gem: The sand sculpture trail opening this Friday covers three very different locations - if you're choosing one, Dock No. 1 in Cospicua gives you the sculptures against the Grand Harbour backdrop, which is hard to beat at golden hour.
